Marvel’s Wolverine mostly throws players into fast-paced combat where slicing through enemies takes center stage. So when you hit a moment in the Japan chapter that asks you to figure out a keypad code instead of just relying on Wolverine’s sense of smell or his claws, it stands out. This puzzle might not be complicated, but it’s a fresh challenge in a game usually more about mayhem than mystery.
When you reach Shiro’s penthouse, you’ll come across a keypad locking an important door. Wolverine’s keen nose normally would pick up the correct four-digit code for you, but this time it doesn’t help — the code has been changed recently, leaving the old scent lingering and confusing Wolverine’s instincts.
Without Wolverine’s nose guiding you, you need to examine the environment visually. Shiro’s penthouse is littered with clues, but your eyes should focus on the nearby manga shelf. Among the volumes of a series titled Unwelcome Chains, you’ll find four manga volumes oddly left sticking out: Volume 1, Volume 9, Volume 2, and Volume 4.
These volumes hold the answer to the keypad puzzle. Step back to the door and enter the code 1924 — the order of the volumes that were out of place. Once keyed in, the door will unlock, letting you progress with the story and action ahead.
So if we can’t rely on our nose to figure out the code, what can we do? Well we’ll use our eyes of course! There are quite a few things scattered around Shiro’s penthouse with numbers on them, so one of them must be related to the code.
Make your way over to Shiro’s manga shelf in the nearby room and you’ll spot a series called Unwelcome Chains which is completed unsorted, with the volumes being nowhere close to in order on the shelf. Amongst these unsorted volumes are four in the middle which aren’t even pushed all the way in the shelf. Volume 1, Volume 9, Volume 2, and Volume 4.
That’s the hint we are looking for. Make your way over to the keypad again and input the code: 1924. Once you’ve input the code, the door will open and you’ll be able to progress through the game.
