Square Enix just unveiled Final Fantasy XIV’s sixth expansion, Evecold, during the North American Fan Fest 2026. With 24 million players already invested, this upcoming chapter promises to expand the universe with a chilling new world that players will explore.

This expansion kicks off the Godless Realms Saga, where the Warrior of Light journeys to The Fourth, a new Shard plagued by calamity much like Shadowbringers took players to The First. This continuation deepens Final Fantasy XIV's multiverse story arcs with fresh high-stakes conflict.

Concept art showcased breathtaking vistas along coastlines and water-based architecture, hinting at diverse environments within The Fourth. Players will find contrasting settlements — from barren outposts to bustling hubs dotted with airships — setting the stage for varied exploration experiences.

The dangers awaiting in The Fourth aren’t just environmental; enormous giants traverse this world, adding formidable challenges. Alongside them, a new friendly feline-like race will appear, providing players with fresh allies to meet and interact with.

Gameplay is set to evolve with Evecold. Square Enix is introducing a revamped Adventurer Activity UI, moving from daily to weekly rewards in the roulette system. This shift aims to refresh grind cycles and keep progression engaging over time.

With this new system, you'll complete weekly missions to earn Activity Points and rewards. If you can’t finish all tasks in one week, you can carry them forward—but only after completing your current week’s challenges, giving players more flexibility in managing objectives.

Final Fantasy XIV’s release structure is also getting a facelift. Updates will treat every two patches post-expansion as a Season. While this won’t affect Item level progress immediately, it could signal a new way to organize content delivery moving forward.

A huge quality-of-life improvement targets gear progression: players can now reflect their highest item level from one job onto others, letting you switch jobs and jump into content without grinding new gear or purchasing items. This one is a game-changer for trying out new roles.

Character customization gets deeper with new tools including:

  1. A color picker for eyes, hair, and skin tones
  2. Enhanced options to adjust eye and lip shapes, plus new eye shadow and face paint layering
  3. The ability to toggle specific parts of gear visibility
  4. A new Character Action Skins system allowing customization of job actions—details coming soon at Fan Fest Berlin

The raid system will also see a new difficulty tier inserted for 8-player content. This new level sits between Normal and Savage difficulty, designed to offer a satisfying challenge without overwhelming players. More clarity will come closer to release.

Alliance Raids, known for being time-intensive, will have progression tweaks to streamline player experience, though the length of the raids won’t be shortened. Fans can expect more announcements about this during the Japanese Fan Fest event.

The duty matching system is expanding, allowing players to team up with others across all data centers within their region for duties. This change reduces the need to switch servers and makes assembling groups for raids and duties easier than ever.

Although the new jobs won’t be revealed until Fan Fest Berlin, we know Evecold will bring a fresh Tank job and a new Physical-Ranged DPS class. These jobs are original to Final Fantasy XIV, not based on previous Final Fantasy titles, widening the game’s role diversity.

Existing jobs—excluding Blue Mage and Beastmaster—will gain a choice between Reborn Mode and Evolved Mode. Reborn stays true to the classic rotations since launch, while Evolved offers streamlined keystrokes with greater emphasis on each job’s unique mechanics.

Yoshi-P compared this dual system to fighting games that offer classic and modern controls, stressing that the game won’t become simplified but instead more customizable. All future jobs, however, will be designed exclusively for Evolved Mode.

The keynote touched on several additional Evercold features, teasing:

  1. Level cap increased from 100 to 110
  2. Return of Treasure Hunts, FATEs, and Hunts, revamped to feel bigger and more dynamic
  3. New instanced dungeons with a surprising lack of ice
  4. Brand new job gear
  5. An 8-player raid series, details forthcoming
  6. A new Duty Support system enabling NPC teaming

Perhaps the most exciting reveal for longtime fans is the theme of Evercold’s Alliance Raids. All three tiers will be inspired by the anime Neon Genesis Evangelion in a series called Final Fantasy XIV: Evangelion – Ghosts of Desire, bridging two iconic franchises.

By far the biggest announcement though was the theme of the expansion’s Alliance Raids. It was announced that all three tiers of Evercold’s Alliance Raids will be themed around the anime Neon Genesis Evangelion. The raid will be titled Final Fantasy XIV: Evangelion – Ghosts of Desire

Evecold is slated for a January 2027 release, following the 7.5 patch. A trailer debuted at Fan Fest showcases the opening cinematic, setting the tone for what’s coming next.

Final Fantasy XIV remains available across PlayStation and Xbox consoles as well as PC. Newcomers can take advantage of the free trial that grants access to content up through Stormblood, with Shadowbringers added next week, making it easier than ever to jump into the evolving world ahead of Evercold.
